It’s the Trophy or Nothing – Yobo

Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo on Thursday reiterated his desire for the team to win the 2013 Africa Nations Cup. Yobo re-emphasized his wish on the team’s arrival in Nelspruit, South Africa for the competition which kicks off on Saturday.

The Fenerbahce defender who alluded to the fact that the 2013 tourney should be his last told reporters that getting the trophy would be a wonderful way to retire.

He said, “And I want to leave the stage by winning something for the team so that those coming behind will have something to look up to. We want Nigerians to support us and know that this young team has the ability to deliver but they must be patient with us and remain behind the team at all times”.

The team had on Wednesday afternoon left its Faro, Portugal training camp by road to Lisbon from where the 23 players and officials led by Coach Stephen Keshi were joined by a member of the football federation and Enyimba of Aba Chairman, Felix Anyasi Agwu. It was from there that the team caught an Air France plane to Paris, France which flew them to Johannesburg.

The team was met by Nigerian Embassy officials and some supporters on arrival in Johannesburg. Eagle later connected to Nelspruit and settled into the Ingwenyama Sports and Resort Centre. Nigeria’s first game is against Burkina Faso on Monday evening.

But as Yobo and his teammates target the trophy, the Nigeria Football Federation has been forced to put aside proposed enhanced win bonuses for the competition.

Head of NFF finance committee Shehu Adamu told MTNFootball.com that there would be no added incentives for the Eagles to win the Nations Cup. He said that the federation would maintain the regular win bonus of $10,000 and $5,000 for draw in South Africa

“We are not preparing anything special as incentives for the Eagles. It’s the regular bonus they would get,” Adamu said.

The NFF had proposed huge bonuses that would have gone for as much as $30,000-a-player for a win in the AFCON final. The figure would have made the Eagles some of the biggest earners in the competition. Nigeria’s Group C opponents were on Wednesday promised more than $111,000 each if they are able to win the coveted African cup. Defending champions Zambia are also in the group.

I Was Never Arrested By EFCC – Soludo

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, on Friday, denied reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, insisting that rather, he was invited by the agency to make clarifications on some issues on a matter under investigation.

It was reported on Thursday that the EFCC arrested the former governor of the CBN in connection with the Australian polymer banknotes bribery scam, which occurred between 2006 and 2008 when he held sway as CBN governor.

However, Prof. Soludo, in a statement issued in Abuja, insisted that he voluntarily went to the EFCC office to honour the commission’s invitation.

The statement, signed on his behalf by Mr Bonaventure Melah, read in part: “We want to put it on record that media reports that Professor Chukwuma Soludo was arrested by operatives of the EFCC in Abuja is totally false or to say the least, written in error.

“The fact of the matter is that the EFCC wrote a letter to Prof. Soludo inviting him to their Abuja office on the 10th of January 2013. EFCC’s invitation letter to Prof. Soludo was dated 20th December, 2012.

“Professor Soludo was abroad attending to several international engagements when the letter was sent to his aides. As a law abiding citizen of the country, Prof. Soludo returned to Nigeria in the New Year and honoured EFCC invitation on January 10th as requested.

“He voluntarily went from his home to EFCC office on Thursday. He was neither arrested nor escorted by any operative of the Commission.”

KALU DROPS OUT OF EAGLES

Few days to the opening ceremony of the Nation’s Cup, Crisis is silently brewing in the camp of the super eagles. Yesterday night, the news flew in that Rizespor forward, Uche Kalu has ruled himself out of the Nigerian squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. Kalu has struggled to recuperate from a groin injury he picked up in his club’s engagement and has opted to leave Nigeria’s pre-Afcon camp in Faro, Portugal.

While the action of Kalu to be truthful must be saluted unequivocally, his leaving the eagle’s camp is not a good omen for the team. After Shola Ameobi’s decision to stay with his club and earn a starting berth, in the wake of Demba Ba’s move to Chelsea, and the now infamous decision to omit the likes of Osaze and Martins, the absence of Kalu will surely be felt in the team as the Attacking potential of the team has been depleted.

Uche Kalu have been in the form of his life for his club in turkey, scoring goals with ease and class and this was why Keshi invited him. However, the former Enyimba forward could not train with the rest of  the squad this week owing to the injury and had been placed under close supervision by the Nigerian team doctor.

He also missed out of Wednesday’s friendly against Catalonia where another striking potential introduced himself to the World. MLS player, Bright Dike is now expected to lead the front line for Nigeria alongside Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses and IK Uche.

No Martins, Osaze, Yakubu, Anichebe and Sone Aluko yet Keshi is confident the Super Eagles will Succeed in the competition. Only time will Tell!!!
